Painted storks have a very beautiful and elegant flight. They often make use of the late morning thermals to soar in search of foraging areas. These birds are highly gregarious and feed in groups in shallow wetlands, crop fields, and irrigation canals. They walk slowly and also disturb the water with their feet to flush hiding small fish, crab etc. they sense by touch while slowly sweeping their half-open bill from side to side while it held submerged, this mode of foraging is known as tactile foraging, in general Stork and Ibis species adopt these strategies for finding their diet. They forage mainly in the day but may forage late or even at night under exceptional conditions. They also eat crustaceans, amphibians, insects, and reptiles, frogs and occasionally small snakes.

Soaring - What are the differences between Gliding and soaring? What do you think when you see a circling Rafter like black kite or a vulture at too high altitude? There is a lot of science involved in this. Various birds reduce journey time by performing more efficient soaring –gliding flight, reduced energy expenditure by flapping less and were more risk-prone by gliding more steeply between thermals. Individuals gain altitude by soaring on ascending air currents, and then glide to achieve horizontal displacement (alternate glides with periods of soaring in rising air). These ascending currents could be generated by topography or by thermal convective currents (air close to the ground heated by solar radiation). Many birds who are using gliding strategies and are higher flyer are able to "lock" their extended wings by means of a specialized tendon available in the wings. Thus, thermal soaring is a form of flight that saves much energy for not only birds but for paragliders, pilots and UAVs by exploiting nature’s energy present in the form of thermals. Five different types of lift are used by different birds or sometimes combination of it.

1. thermals, 2. dynamic soaring, 3. ridge lift, 4. convergences and 5. lee waves.

Examples of soaring flight by birds are the use of:

· Thermals and convergences by raptors such as storks, vultures, peregrine falcon, brown pelicans and eagles

· ridge lift by vultures, Honey Buzzards, eagles and gulls near cliffs

· Wave lift by migrating birds like White Storks and different Geese. These lee waves and convergence are used by nature for sufficient vertical displacement of clouds to cool the air to the dew point for rains.

· Dynamic effects near the surface of the sea by Wandering albatrosses (Diomedea exulans)

· The Andean condor is a South American vulture, can have a 3-meter wingspan and weighs up to 15 kg, making it the world’s heaviest soaring bird. This vulture can fly in single soaring flight for 100 miles without flapping wings, it flaps its wings just 1% of the time during flight,

Gliding - In gliding flight, a bird's wings deflect air downward, causing a lift force that holds the bird up in the air without flapping wings. By tilting forward and going into a slight dive, the bird can maintain forward speed. Some arboreal animals reduce their rate of falling by gliding. Gliding is heavier than air flight without the use of thrust the term "volplaning" also refers to this mode of flight in animals. This mode of flight involves flying a greater distance horizontally than vertically and therefore can be distinguished from a simple descent like a parachute or glider. There are some examples of gliding animals other than birds in several major taxonomic classes such as the invertebrates (gliding ants), reptiles (Chrysopelea ,banded flying snake, Draco lizards ), amphibians ( flying frog), mammals ( flying squirrel glider, lemur or Colugos).

NOTE- The observations were made from a safe hide-out with proper camouflaged clothing and ambience. A considerable distance from the nest was maintained to avoid disturbances during observation. These photographs are collected and observations were made during my 12 years of immense efforts and birdwatching and roaming in the wild.
