भगवान कृष्ण कि हर छवि में आपने मोर पंख जरूर देखा होगा, इसलिए श्रीकृष्ण को "मोर मुकुट धारी" भी कहते हैं। संस्कृत साहित्य के विभिन्न शास्त्रों में भगवान श्री कृष्ण के साथ दो पक्षियों का उल्लेख विशेष रूप से हुआ है। जिसमें मोर(भारतीय पीफाउल) एवं गरुड़ (सरपनटाइन ईगल) शामिल हैं, भगवान श्री कृष्ण की छबियों में ये दोनों पक्षी विशेष रुप से दिखाई देते हैं।यह संयोग ही है कि भगवान श्री कृष्ण द्वारा कालिया नाग का मर्दन किया गया था, और ये दोनों पक्षी भी सर्पभक्षी है। श्रीमद्भागवत गीता के अध्याय 10 श्लोक 30 में भगवान श्री कृष्ण स्वयं कहते हैं।

प्रह्लादश्चास्मि दैत्यानां कालः कलयतामहम्।

मृगाणां च मृगेन्द्रोऽहं वैनतेयश्च पक्षिणाम् - 10.30

हिन्दी भावार्थ:-

जिसका अर्थ है दैत्यों में मैं श्रेष्ठ प्रहलाद की तरह हूं, समय में मैं सबसे घातक काल की तरह हूं। पशुओं में मैं सर्वश्रेष्ठ सिंह के समान हूं, एवं पक्षियों में मैं भगवान विष्णु के वाहन गरुड़ के समान हूं।

शास्त्रों के अनुसार विष्णु के अब तक दस अवतार हो चुके हैं मगर कृष्ण के अलावा किसी अन्य ने मोर मुकुट नहीं धारण किया। कई कथाओं में यह जिक्र आया है कि कृष्ण भगवान को मोर पंख बहुत पसंद था इसलिए वह सदैव मोर पंख मुकुट में सजाए रखते थे।

ऐसी मान्यता है कि श्रीकृष्ण जब राधा के संग मुरली बजाकर नृत्य किया करते थे। तब मोर भी उनके संग नृत्य करते थे। एक बार श्रीकृष्‍ण राधा के साथ नृत्य कर रहे थे तभी उनके साथ ही झूमकर नृत्य कर रहे एक मोर का पंख भूमि पर गिर गया तो प्रभु श्रीकृष्ण ने उठाकर उसे अपने सिर पर धारण कर लिया। जब राधाजी ने उनसे इसका कारण पूछा तो उन्होंने कहा कि इन मोरों के नाचने में उन्हें राधाजी का प्रेम दिखता है।

एक अन्य मान्यता में भगवान श्री राम का जन्म जब त्रेता युग में हुआ था, उस समय जब भगवान श्री राम एक बार घूमने निकलें, कटीले रास्तों पर मोर के एक समूह ने पंखों से उनका रास्ता साफ़ किया था। मोरों की इतनी दया, शिष्टता और भक्ति को देखकर श्री राम ने मोरों को वचन दिया कि द्वापर युग में जब वे फिर से जन्म लेंगे तो यह मोर पंख वे अपने मस्तक पर धारण करेंगे। इसीलिए जब कृष्ण ने द्वापर युग में जन्म लिया तो मोर पंख को अपने मुकुट पर सजाया और अपना वादा पूरा किया।

You must have seen peacock feathers in almost every image of Lord shri Krishna, hence Shri Krishna is also called "peacock crown bearer- Mormukutdhari". In various scriptures of Sanskrit literature, there is a special mention of two birds with Lord Krishna. Including Peacock (Indian Peafowl) and Garuda (Serpentine Eagle). Both these birds are specially seen in the images of Lord Shri Krishna. Is it a coincidence that Kaliya Nag(An evil serpentine) was controlled by Lord Shri Krishna, and both these birds are also snake-eaters. Lord Shri Krishna himself says in Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta Adhyay 10 Shlok 30.

Prahlaadashchaasmi daityaanaan kaalah kalayataamaham.

English Translation (Gist):-

Among the demons I am like Prahlada. In time I am like the deadliest "Kaal". Among the animals I am like the mighty lion, and among the birds I am like Garuda(Serpentine Eagle), the vehicle of Lord Vishnu.

(Prahlada was a demons king, the son of Hiranyakashipu and Kayadhu, and the father of Virochana. He is described as a saintly boy from the Puranas known for his piety and bhakti to Lord Vishnu)

It is believed that when Shri Krishna used to dance with Radha by playing the flute. Then peacocks also danced with him. Once Shri Krishna was dancing with Radha, when a peacock feather dancing with him fell on the ground, Lord Shri Krishna picked it up and held it on his head. When Radhaji asked him the reason for this, he said that he sees Radhaji's love in the dancing of these peacocks.

In another belief, when Lord Shri Ram was born in Treta Yuga(about 7000 years ago), when Lord Shri Ram once went for a walk, a group of peacocks cleared his way with feathers on the thorny paths. Seeing so much kindness, courtesy and devotion of the peacocks, Shri Ram promised the peacocks that when he will born again (reincarnation) in Dwapar Yuga(about 5000 years ago), he would wear this peacock feather on their heads. That is why when Krishna took birth in Dwapara Yuga, he decorated the peacock feather on his crown and fulfilled his promise.
