आप जब भी अपना घर बनाने के बारे में सोचते हैं तो आप या निर्माण अभियंता किन बातों का ध्यान रखता है? सुंदरता, सुविधा, सुरक्षा, मजबूती, दिशाओं का ध्यान रखना, अपने चाहने वालों के मकान से नजदीकी, समूह में सुरक्षा इत्यादि। क्या कोई पक्षी भी इन सभी बातों का ध्यान अपना घोंसला बनाते समय रखता है?
बया पक्षी का घोसला एक अच्छी कारीगरी का उत्कृष्ट नमूना है। इसलिए इसे बुनकर पक्षी और, इसी कुशलता के कारण इन्हें पक्षियों का इंजीनियर कहा जाता है। बया प्रजाति के पक्षी अधिकतर अपना घोंसला नहर, नदी, तालाबों और नालो के किनारों के आसपास पाई जाने वाली कंटीली झाड़ियो और पेड़ो में तैयार करते हैं। जो सामान्यतः पानी के उपर होते हैं जिससे शिकारी इन घोसलों तक आसानी से न पहुंच सके। इन झाड़ियो में एक साथ कई उल्टे लटकते सुंदर घोंसले की बस्ती (कालोनी) देखने को मिलती है। घोंसला बनाने के लिए सामग्रियों का चयन, धैर्य पूर्वक उनको बुनकर सुंदर बनाना तथा मजबूती इनकी खासियत है। इस पक्षी को अपना घोंसला तैयार करने में 25 से 35 दिन का समय लगता है। नर पक्षी को एक घोंसला पूरा करने के लिए 700 से अधिक बार सामग्री जमा करने के लिए चक्कर लगाने पड़ते हैं, वह अपनी मजबूत चोंच का उपयोग रेशों को इकट्ठा करने एवं उनको बुनकर की तरह बुनने के लिए करता है। वे धान के पत्तों की पट्टियों, खुरदरी घासों और ताड़ के पत्तों को फाड़कर लंबी पट्टियों का उपयोग करते हैं। जो 10 सेंटीमीटर से 60 सेंटीमीटर तक लंबी हो सकती है। बया के घोसले की बनावट अत्यंत जटिल होतीं है। यह एक लौकी (बॉटल गार्ड) की तरह लटके हुए दिखते है। ये ऊपर एवम् नीचे की तरफ से पतले, बेलनाकार और बीच मे मोटे गोल आकार के होते है। इसके घोसले का निकासी भाग सकरा बेलनाकार, टयूब की तरह होता है। बया पक्षी के घोंसले इतने मजबूत होते है की, तेज आंधी तूफान में भी ये डाली से नीचे नही गिरते है, ये अपनी पकड़ डाली से बनाये रहते है। जिन पेड़ो पर यह पक्षी घोसला बनाता है, वो कांटेदार होते है जिससे शिकारी जानवरो से इनके बच्चों का बचाव होता है। अक्सर इस पक्षी को बबूल और खजूर के पेड़ पर घोंसला बनाते देखा गया है। मादा बया पक्षी द्वारा इनका चयन किया जाता है। घोंसले अक्सर पेड़, झाड़ियों के पूर्वी हिस्से में स्थित होते हैं, जहां माना जाता है, कि वे दक्षिण-पश्चिम मानसून से आश्रय प्रदान करते हैं, तथा मानसून में सूरज की गर्मी से सूखे रहते हैं। हालांकि देर से प्रजनन करने वाले पक्षियों के घोंसले पेड़ के तने के सापेक्ष झुकावों के अनुसार बनाने की अधिक संभावना होती है। परित्यक्त तथा पुराने, घोंसलों का उपयोग कभी-कभी चूहों और अन्य पक्षियों जैसे मुनिया द्वारा किया जाता है।

What do you or a construction engineer keep in mind whenever you think of building your own house? Convenience, beauty, security, strength, taking care of directions, proximity to the house of your loved ones, security in a group, etc. Does any bird also take care of all these things while building its nest?
Baya bird's elaborately woven nest is a beautiful piece of fine workmanship. That is why it is called a weaver bird and, because of this skill, he is called an engineer of birds. Birds of the Baya species mostly make their nest in the thorny bushes and trees found around the banks of canals, rivers, ponds and streams. Which are usually above standing water so that hunters cannot reach these nests easily. In these bushes, many beautiful nesting settlements (colonies) hanging upside down are seen together. Their specialty is the selection of materials for making nests, their hard work and patient weaving and strength. They use strips of paddy leaves, rough grasses and long strips torn from palm fronds, which can be 10 to 60 cm long. It takes 25 to 35 days for male bird to prepare its nest. The male bird has to make more than 700 rounds of material gathering to complete a nest, He uses his strong beak to collect the fibres and weave them like a weaver. The structure of the nest of Baya is very complex. It looks like a bottle gourd hanging on a tree. They are thin, cylindrical from above and below and thick spherical in the middle. The entrance part of its nest is narrow cylindrical, tube-like. The nests of the birds are so strong that they do not fall down from the branch even in strong storms. These nests keep their grip on the branch during strong wind. The trees on which this bird makes its nest are thorny, which protects their young from predatory animals. Often this bird has been seen nesting on acacia and date palm trees. These nests are selected by the female Baya bird. Nests are often located on the eastern side of trees, shrubs, where they are believed to provide shelter from the south-west monsoon, and this keep nests dry from the heat of the direct sunlight during the monsoons. However, late breeders are more likely to build their nests according to the relative orientations of the tree trunk to the nest. Abandoned and old, nests are sometimes used by rats and other birds such as finch species birds.

NOTE- The observations were made from a safe hide-out with proper camouflaged clothing and ambience. A considerable distance from the nest was maintained to avoid disturbances during observation. These photographs are collected and observations were made during my 12 years of immense efforts and birdwatching and roaming in the wild.
